Sock yarn's allowed. As is roving to spin your own, supplies with which to knit with, patterns, and there is one "fall off the wagon" allowed as well. ;)
I pointed out that being someone who doesn't currently knit socks that buying sock yarn violates the spirit of the thing, but didn't make a big deal about it.
